Berger contributes to building a school in Cambodia

In late 2011, Berger joined forces with Prelco, Mécanique Beber and the Rivière-du-Loup Rotary Club to help finance the Helping Cambodia project from the CASIRA organization. The goal of this collaborative project was to build a village school where students would be taught English and other standard subjects.
The idea for the project originated when Pierre-Jacques Gervais, a CASIRA volunteer, was travelling in the Siem Reap province of northern Cambodia. There he met Leng Touch, an artist who also runs a private orphanage on the grounds of the Angkor Temple. Leng had long dreamed of building a school in each of the eight villages of his native commune. Upon his return to Quebec, Pierre-Jacques Gervais initiated the Helping Cambodia project in collaboration with other volunteers, including Jacques Roy, who is also a member of Berger’s board of directors. It was decided that the school built with CASIRA’s help would be in “Village Number 6”.
In addition to construction of the school itself, CASIRA established a plan to help the facility become self-financing within three years. The three-pronged approach to financial autonomy includes the creation of a program to attract tourists, setting up a profitable handicraft cottage industry, and finally, developing agricultural initiatives. The total cost of the Helping Cambodia project would come to $20,000.
The school is now in operation and welcomes approximately 225 students between the ages of 2 and 16. Equipped with solar panels to provide electricity, the facility can also be used as a community center in the evenings. Berger is proud to contribute to the ongoing development of this Cambodian community.
